Five Cats Again

On the morning of January 28, we noticed that Kasumi was drooling more than usual; a closer look showed that her jaw was swollen. We took her to the vet that morning to find out what was wrong.

It was a tumor.

One week later, on February 4, we took Kasumi back to the vet…and came home without her.

We miss you, little K-Chan.

Must See

If you have not seen The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, then you absolutely must click the link and see it now! Oh, and bring a hanky – I needed one by the end.

This was originally posted to the book arts list earlier today by someone else, I only saw it about half an hour ago.

Blackout Tomorrow

Yes, we’ve got the President on our side of the Internet censorship war. No, that doesn’t mean we can just go back to what we were doing and act like everything’s going to be okay forever now.

Surf around tomorrow, see which of your favorite sites are dark. That would be a censored Internet. All the fun stuff would be gone -  a bunch of the informative stuff as well. And I don’t think any of us want that.

Kiss the Camel Goodbye

Finally made the camel go away!  The gears are temporary until I find something better, although I do like them.

Winner!

With 54,471 words in 30 days. And I achieved every last NaNo merit badge too! (although the Caffeine Abuse one was accidental)

The Sunday Cat

Fifteen minutes late, but it’s up!

A tiny baby Xena

Once upon a time, Xena was a tiny little kitty - this picture is proof of it

Had a 7000+ word day today, bringing me almost halfway to the 50,000 word goal for Camp. Still about 10,000 odd words behind, but I’m getting caught up. And our daughter has graduated from boot camp and come home…just in time to start back to school tomorrow! One more year of high school and then she can go back to the Army she loves full time, until then she’s a weekend warrior.

Weekly Update

Okay, probably until August is over a weekly update is all you’re going to get. We’re trying to paint and redecorate two bedrooms – today, we’re heading to Ikea to buy a piece of furniture for one of them. Next week we go to see our daughter graduate from boot camp, then I have another writing contest for two days on Friday and Saturday, our daughter will come home Friday night, and then we have loads of back to school shopping to do because school starts MONDAY. It’s she and her brother’s senior year.

Did I mention that I’m waaaay behind on my word count for Camp NaNo? Yep, that too. So no one is surprised that I’m not getting any books made? Good.

As I mentioned around the beginning of the month, I was trying out a piece of software called Liquid Story Binder XE, because now that I’m writing actual novel-length stuff instead of short stories a single Word document just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I’d heard about LSB and that some people loved it, but I’d also heard that it was 1) insanely complicated because of all the features, 2) had a steep learning curve, because of all the possible configurations of the features, and 3) lacked some export functionality. I’d also heard that it was endlessly customizable for any style of writing, which is what got me past 1 and 2.

Then I found out you could install it on a flash drive (the program is surprisingly small) and carry it around to use anywhere. I decided that exporting to RTF was not a bad thing after all. I downloaded it, installed it on a flash drive…and was shortly thereafter overwhelmed. The tutorials on the software website didn’t help. Then I found another set of tutorials by a blogger named Merrilee, who is a genius – she made her tutorials to work for different kinds of writers, so we could all set up the software to do what we personally needed it to do. Which I did, yay! It’s working great now. Big thanks to Merrilee for that.

Again, no time to make books right now, even though I have two waiting to be finished that I REALLY need to get done. Maybe later in the month, if I can at least catch up on word count for Camp, something will get finished.

Well, Ikea beckons, and then I have an appointment with multiple cans of paint. But you’ll still get your Sunday cat tonight, never fear!

The Should-Have-Been Sunday Cat

Yes, I kind of fell down on the job yesterday, but here albeit a day late is your Sunday cat:

Abby - Shouldn't you be working?

Shouldn't you be working?

This picture was taken from my desk chair in front of my desk, where I was supposed to be writing but was reading lists on Cracked instead. It’s really no surprise that I’m about a day behind on my word count for camp.

Weekend Entertainment

I’m writing, and tomorrow if all goes as planned I’m taking a break from that to go see Captain America. But in case any of you aren’t quite so occupied and want something to entertain you, here is something. And it’s even book related!

I don’t remember where I first heard of this story, only that there was a link and I followed it…straight into Mr Penumbra’s Twenty-Four-Hour Book Store. It’s a well-written little story and I’ve read and enjoyed it multiple times, drawn back by the Twilight Zone-worthy way it unfolds against its chosen backdrop of the recent (or maybe I should say ongoing) economic crisis. And it has a good and not depressing ending, which I appreciate.

Enjoy!
